11/16 Readings

I have to say this week's readings were not my favorites of the sememster. Kristeva was a little over my head. I found the article intersting, but I read it several times and I'm not quite sure I grasped the concept.

I think the Enzensberger article reinforced a lot of the ideas we've been discussing in class regarding poetic interpretation and the perception of the general public toward poetry. While I found the arguments against the force feeding of poetry interesting, what I gained most from the article is the full scope of the impact that socitial values has on poetry. From previous readings we can clearly see how socitial preferrences effect the topic and form of poetry. I felt that Enzensberger was calling for a poetry more conected with society than with the cannonical tradition. I think Enzensberger would have been as horrified as Berstien at the proposal of national poetry month.

I liked that the enznsberger reading was balanced by the Gennette article. His explaination for the existence of and the use for poetry. This reading is a call for interpretation in order to find deeper meaning through poetry. I really like this perspective because it gave poetry a purpose. I think I've always considered poetry to be important, but most for artstic value, but Genette defines their role through their use of lanuage and goes as far to say that verse is necessary because of short comings of the language.
