Corrido - Gregorio Cortez

Gregorio Cortez is a badass. The different versions of the Corrido, although each are different and similar, they all show how afraid everyone was of Gregorio Cortez. They also have guns and have 200 some more people, but still they have trouble catching up to, and better yet killing/capturing Cortez. He can just taunt 200 men that are chasing him, and none of them do anything for they are deathly afraid of him. Gregorio Cortez is my hero.

Ceremony

The story/poem going on in ceremony, was just a short way of unclearly explaining what Tayo was going through. It wasn’t until Tayo finished the ceremony and was cured, that the rain came back in the mini story. (The buzzard purifying the land) It talks about mother Nau’ts’ity’i being very upset about Ma’see’wi and Ou’yu’ye’wi playin with the Ck’o'yo magic. She then took away the rain clouds.

This was showing that wrong was going on. And until wrongs could be fixed, the rain would be held off and drought would come over the land. It seems alot of people kind of strayed away from their cultural traditions and this upset the land. Tayo was just the representative for all of his people and by him completing the ceremony, wrongs were made right.

Dreamlife of Letters

I really liked this motion poem on the computer for a few reasons. It was different. I’ve never seen these types of poems ever before. It wasn’t slow, it kept moving quickly and I liked how it went A-Z in order so you could follow it a little bit better. Alot of members in class said they didn’t like it so much because it was hard to follow. It was a little hard to follow but I don’t think I missed very much. Like we talked about in class, it was definitely watching and reading at the same time.
I would be interested to see more of these types of poems in class.

Fairy Tales

The fairy tales we had to read for class were unlike any that i’ve ever read before. First of all the sugarcoatedness is gone from the stories. Girls chopping off their big toe to fit into a shoe is a pretty drastic measure. Getting your eyes plucked out by birds sure teaches you a message, but is it acceptable to teach kids this message by such drastic means?
I think the stories were a little bold, but not totally out of kids reach. In this I mean I wouldn’t read these stories to my 3-7 year old kid. But I would in fact read it to my kids when they are 8+. I think by that age they will have a better understanding of whats actually happening and that the story is there to teach a lesson to those who do bad upon others.
So to sum it up, kids too young might find the fairy tales scary and not something they would want to hear before they went to bed. So in that aspect I don’t think those were designed to the younger crowd.
