In amusements I found Victor & Sadie the prime tricksters, they seems a bit selfish and unkind. At first they took it as a joke, but when they realized what they had done all they did was worry about their own asses. They ran off without helping the poor guy ( dirty joe) out. They fooled everyone around them even the carney to put him on the ride without realizing the outcome or the consequences they’d have to face, they thought it would be fun, without thinking of the harm they were doing. At the end of the story, they were the onl ones who were tricked, they’ve realized what they’ve caused and ran scared.

I felt that people during this time period didn’t really think of mental patients as people, but more as lab rats, i dont understand how they could use the EST machine and not understand how it couldn’t hurt someone physically of course, but mentally i think it hurts even worse, I dont think the doctors really cared to think about how much damaged they were doing to someone, becuase they felt it was a lost cause, but why not take a shot at it. I didn’t think McMurphy had any mental issues, at times I thought of him as a sociopath but it was obvious that in the end he was worse than he came after they gave him a labodomy. Nurse Rachet seemed to hate her life so she just took it out on the patients by making their life even more miserable, it was a neverending cycle that McMurphy was only trying to break.

The main conflict between nurse Rachet and McMurphy, is the power they have over people. The nurse has power over all the board and fellow employee’s and the patients, physically, but McMurphy has power over the patients mentality. The psych ward is much different of the real world becuase, during that time men were still very much in control of most of the world, where as it was completely opposite in the mental institution. The book takes on so many issues, from segregation, to harrasment, to race, to sexism, there are so many messed up problems that need fixed and it all seems to point back to the nurse. I read a book similar to this in my psychology class called girl interupted, except the nurse and the people that worked their weren’t “the bad guys” but there was a character much like McMurphy that was a girl in the story. I find stories like these very interesting, in thinking, if thoughts like these really do go through mental patients heads.

Locra’s blood wedding is based on marriages that hae no love involved, it kind of reminds me of way back when arranged marraiges still exsisted, which they do but its rare to find. I know that where i come from, Korea, there is still arranged marriages that take place today. People that are wealthy are expected to be with someone who is also well off otherwise they are disowned and shunned by their family. I also have a friend from Albania who are only allowed to marry Albanians and if you are born a girl there is no dating or conversing with boys allowed, and other families were to find out, its hard find someone who will marry youre daughter, I think its soo messed up, but thats tradition I guess. I always veiwed marriage as a sacred promise between two people that are deeply in love. The story doesn’t really seem to surprise me though, becuase arrange marriages do happen, and affairs happen due to those. I , as well as other, find it hard to understand how you can survive a loveless marriage, but i suppose its becuase people are raised differently, but that still leaves the question to, how can you just live life like a robot, not allowing yourself to freely love? I guess it all comes down to money, people say money isn’t everthing, but its kind of easier said than done.

i’m very fond of this book so far, and it has many interesting events that occur. My favorite character is Blanca, but the book mainly deals with clara. I find it hard to relate to clara as im sure the characters in the novels do also. Like when she realizes Estaban rapes girls she just feel sbad for the girls but doesn’t really care much for her own husband, or when her kids are just all over the place, of course she worries about them, put she has horrible and poor parenting skills, but i do like her. She has all these psychic premonitions, and it seems like the characters depend on them because they always come true. Towards the end of chapter 8 Blanca breaks into Jean’s secret room and finds all these pictures on the walls, but i don’t understand because i think that jean might be a homosexual even though when they were only aquaintences he seemed to be infatuated with her, but once their married he gives her freedom and they don’t really have “sexual relations” and him having a special assistant and not spending time with women seem pretty suspicious to me. Anyways, im not in favor of Esteban, Nicholas(?) is not too great either, their both pretty self-absorbed & selfish, & if pedro didn’t rebel i think it wouldn’t be so difficult to be with blanca & i feel bad for jaime because he keeps getting shafted by his brother and seems to be like vapor to everyone else.

what i look forward to at the end of the week is going on postsecrets.com because people with depression or with their deepest darkest secret is sent to this website by postcards. It is said that it has helped hundreds of people let go of the past & move on with their future & also help people trun away from suicidal thoughts or even suicide. That is what the lies project reminded me of, except the messeges seemed more like very short excerpts, that weren’t as understandable. I enjoyed it a lot more than the asteroids because the asteroids kind of made me wig out with the noise and the words shooting and coming out of nowhere. It didn’t strike my attention in a good way. I think it makes sence to ask questions about these lines of words or sentences because i like to have a full understanding or meaning behind it. The sites invite an understanding for others and may discourage others with thte overwhelming confusion. I’d like to say that the built in interactivity have very rich qualities, but it also depends on the graphics,. coloring and sounds, like i said i was put off by asteroids mainly because of the noise.

I enjoyed reading all the difference genres of gregorio cortez, i felt that it was easier to understand the reading more than the movie, if i never read the story & didn’t even hear of it, i dont think i would’ve understood the movie. Except, it seemed as though the movie and the collection of stories portrayed cotez differently. In the stories it kind of seemed lyk cortez was cocky and had too much pride that his ego got to him, but in the movie they made him look innonocent and that he did the right thing because of what he had lost and loved and cared for. I also think the reason behind those different portrals was becasue of when the story was written and when the movie was made, whichever was appropriate to attract viewers and readers

i didn’t really enjoy the book because it seemed all over the place and sporadic, but after reviewing the story and his character during class i felt more interested in the story. i didn’t really feel bad for the character becuase it seemed as though he was whining the whole time, until he tried hard enough to get what he really wanted and deserved. He went through a lot of obstacles with his race, & his family & his friends, & his life, but at the end of the book he finally regains the real & true him & he gets to live the way he deserves to live.
I felt as though the importance of the novel was to not give up & don’t ever, let anyone make you feel like you dont deserve what you want. His family & friends seem to pull him away from what he needed to reach, & when he went back on the right track, he found himself.

I feel that fairytales and blues lyrics have a strong connection with literature. Blues music have a lot of feeling behind it, with the way it is performed and also written, the way a person present it is how much passion and meaning there is to it. they serve a very important purpose to society itself, I think, to show people what someone is trying to say or speak out to a crowd of what they believe or what they are going through, whether its heart break, or an obstacle they are personally going through. Fairytales, on the other hand, show people a fantasy land, to take them away from all reality, but to feel what is magical or unimaginable, and to make it come alive just from reading a story. I don’t think we read them in the same way, because sometimes stories are written in slang which some of us may not be able to interprt well, but i’m sure from the writer’s point of view it is read differently, and understood differently coming from him/her. They are definately worth reading and teaching because there is so much history behinds blues and other genres of stories. I think it helps people to become more cultured and understand the past itself just from little storys whether they are legends, myths, morals,..etc. The choices of language that people choose to read effect our reading experience, because it sounds copmletely different, even if it is read in a british accent, or a southren accent, it seems to be heard and understood differently. I think that certain texts that are written in a specialized style is readable, but when they are put in slang southern terms, like the uncle remus story, it was very hard for me to read and understand it at the same time. I think the text shows how people back in the day were less educated, due to the time period and today it is rare to find people that speak in that accent. Although I still have trouble with speaking proper english and slang meanings are still used today. I think the way we speak now won’t be any different from the way we speak five yrs maybe ten years from now, but history does show some made up terms and slang words that maybe teens or certain groups of people make up, and start a trend, and i still see new made up words being created through our coming years.

I was always still curious of what the stories were like so i’d make my older brother read them to me. Of course being an 8 yr old girl i enjoyed the disney versions better because there was always the happily ever afters. Now though i enjoy more of the Grimm’s version of the stories because they seem more lyk fables & have a deeper meaning behind them rather than the disney versions, but i still wouldn’t recommend it to children.
