Trickster

December 9th, 2006

Well I believe the most obvious example of a trickster at work is in the story Amusements. This occurs when Victor and Sadie find Dirty Joe passed out on the ground at the park. When they find him there first instinct is too help him and take him where they are going so he will be safe and not get arrested. However when they find that this will be impossible Victor decides to put him on the rollercoaster and make a big joke out of all of it. This is when the trickster comes out because Victor could have done the right thing and helped Dirty Joe, or even left him there. But instead he decided to entice the situation and put him on the coaster where he could be ridiculed and get in trouble. He also could have even went back for him when he seen a crowd gathering but even then he just laughed and ran when he saw the security guards coming to get Dirty Joe. There were several time where he could have been decent and done the right thing but refused for the sake of amusement and making a fool out of Dirty Joe.

One issue In Cuckoos Nest

December 9th, 2006

The conflict between the Big Nurse and McMurphy suggest a view of the world outside the hospital by basically saying there is more things in life then just what she says. The Big Nurse has the mentality that she is all for the ward and tries to keep the inmates sheltered out of everything but what she says, which is not the truth nor is it anything close to what is actually going on. No where in the book does she talk about current events with them, she basically keeps them sheltered for what she thinks is their own good, but then again maybe she is just trying to see just how powerful she is. I think the only reason she controls them is because they are in such bad shape psychologically and know no different. With them as incompetent as they are she could tell them that the Easter Bunny was real and they would all believe her with no questions asked. This happens up until McMurphy comes in and starts telling them all these other things that they never thought were possible. It is because of this that these people start acting normal and some of them eventually recuperate while the big nurse is gone.

I believe that Chief Bromden is healed when he starts speaking again. I believe this because I think it was always a security issue. He felt so small and weak that he was afraid to talk for fear that people would think of him as such. I think that McMurphy has a great influence on finally making Bromden a man. He helps him find out who he really is and what he can do by himself. When Bromden says he is too small to rebel we say that he is crazy and that he is the biggest and toughest person in the entire ward. I think that without McMurphy’s help Bromden would have never found himself and therefore he never would have helped anyone in the ward. Bromden and McMurphy played a big role in determining the future of the other innocent patients in the ward.

Blood wedding

November 7th, 2006

I choose family to write about in this blog. These idea is represents by the characters through fierce hatred as well as well as wanting a big family to do work in the fields. I picked the quotes “ Can anyone bring your father back? Or your brother? Then there’s jail. What do they mean jail? They eat there, smoke there, play music there! My dead men choking with weeds, silent turning into dust. Two men like two beautiful flower. The killers in jail, carefree, looking at the mountains.” And “Your father, he used to take me. That’s the way with men of good stock; good blood. Your grandfather left a son on every corner. That’s what I like. Men, men; wheat, wheat.” Both of these quotes were said by the mother who is setting a very good example of how mad she is with the people who killed her husband and son as well as tell her son she wants lots of grandchildren. As well the son very much agrees to do almost whatever the mother wants. I believe that this is the thought with everyone throughout the play. There also seems to be a very strong relationship with family throughout the first act of the play. Which I can foresee holding strong throughout the entire play.

House of Spirits post 1

October 15th, 2006

The book is very interesting thus far. At first it was very hard to pick up everything that was being portrayed, but once you get into the flow of it the reading gets easier. I think Blanca is the most important character in this novel from what I’ve read so far. She seems to have the most useful powers and well as the most powerful. I am very interested in what she will do next. Everything went bad for her so she stopped talking and when she finally did start talking again she made the bold prediction that she would get married. Sure enough Esteban came and one day asked her for her hand in marriage. Several years after that, things go bad and Blanca vows never to talk to him again. Things are getting very interesting and I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next.

lit games

October 15th, 2006

I think that theses games were very unique. They were fun when you first started learning how to play but after a while they got very boring and dry. The same stuff repeated over and over until you just got mad and turned it off. So in a sense they were very frustrating at times toward the end of your session. They tell you that you can find literature anywhere and can be can be the author of your very own part in a masterpiece. I believe that it does make since to ask the questions because I feel that there is a line in literature that everyone must see and this makes that line very visible. These games invite an almost creative way to look at reading. You can read anything and just wonder if the author is someone just like you or not. I would defiantly say that there is a lot of intention behind these games. They where designed and put there for a reason and that and intention lie hand in hand. The built in activity makes it seem poorer in a sense because it looks like it’s cheap. However this is not the case, I think that the target is the younger adults and honestly it is just not something that is very interesting so it needs help and the interactivity is the answer.

Corrido

October 3rd, 2006

I believe that the circulation of Corrido through its many singers and versions tells you that literature is meant to entertain. There are several different versions of the same story because the version that was told is what people want to hear. So for each different area and each different type of people the version changed just a little bit. For instance if your father was a Texas Ranger you might get the thought that Corrido was a very bad person who deserved to die, however if you are a Mexican the story might lean toward to how much of a great person he was and how he was a hero in everyone’s eyes.
I can think of some literature as having that same social use. Much literature is used to entertain and to entertain you must give the reader or listener what they want. If you do not do this then people no longer care or read anymore of your work. This tells you that audiences are very picky as to what they want and are willing to read. Therefore literature must keep changing to fulfill the needs of the common reader

Ceremony

September 21st, 2006

The short little poems that are spread throughout the book indicate breaking points in Tayo’s life. I believe that these poems show Tayo’s life story up to that point. They also show the important parts that happen in his life. These stories are very important to the reader to keep them up to date with what is going on throughout the story.
Without these stories in the novel I would have been completely lost. Also they play a big part in categorizing who Tayo is as well as what he is all about. Every one of the stories have such a significant meaning that you never realize until the book was over and you reflected on the book as a whole. It was then that everything finally clicked for me and I realized what everything meant.

post number 2

September 21st, 2006

I think that the choices of language affect your reading experience greatly. One way is if a novel is written in and ordinary style it is way easier to read as opposed to one that is written in specific context. I personally would read a boring book written in ordinary text way before an interesting book written in a way that would take me awhile to figure out. For that matter not all texts written in a specialized style are even readable.
I think that the effort put into reading tells you mostly about the text. In putting forth the extra effort you tend to pick up more then you would if you just went through it once in little to no time. However it also tells you that the language itself is forever changing. It has started this change since the begging of time and will continue to do so throughout the future. We as humans are always going to some up with something better then what we have now. I think that history will say that the way we speak today is foolish and incomprehensible.

Fairy Tales

September 19th, 2006

I believe that the biggest thing that could be called into question about our ideas of fairy tales is which audience the tales were accually meant for. In reading the Grim Fairy Tales, I think that these were soley intended for adults to read. Even though each tale has a moral or morals that would hold very valuable to children there are other elements that make them interesting to the older reader. However, the graphic content in these tales make them unacceptable for young aduidences to read. On the other hand, there is no doubt that these tales hold life lessons within them that are necessary for a younger reader to learn.
Without ever reading the newer versions of these fairy tales I would view them as very interesting because of the way the words are used and put together making visualizing the events simple. Yet, the endings in these tales are startling even in today’s world. These tales make me think of times when as a boy I would sit with my friends around the campfire where we made up stories trying to scare each other. If these tales were the only version available I would certainly not allow younger children to read them.
