Sherman Alexie…

10 12 2006

So when we viewed a conference online by Mr. SHerman Alexie, it was not what I expected! We looked up Sherman Alexie on “Youtube” and found an interesting conference with him speaking to an audience. Now when I think of authors speaking to an audience somewhere especially dressed up and promoting his or her books, I think professionalism, right? It was completely opposite in this situation! I noticed a man “Sherman Alexie” making jokes and gestures of many natures to an audience who laughed and enjoyed his talks about nothing! His life and what he does every day seemed to be the talk of the night rather the discussion of his many novels that he has written. I knew this man was a character in his own sense and in his own world but I didn’t expect what I heard on that video. I think it’s good to see an author who enjoys what he does but also can have a positive attitude about himself and about the world around him…it resembled a sort of comedian on stage like a Dave Chappelle rather an author promoting. I think that if anyone were to see this video without knowing Sherman Alexie, they would think he was a comedian rather than an author :)

Trickster!

10 12 2006

Ok so we define Trickster as is a god, goddess, spirit, human, or anthropomorphic animal who plays pranks or otherwise disobeys normal rules and norms of behavior. (Webstersonline) The word trickster can be used in the current novel of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The Indians are party animals. The story bounces around with actions that seem to come about at a local College. I mean some of the things that these guys do, resembles college student behavior. I mean when students party, they do some crazy things when alcohol is involved. These Indians especially Victor seem to represent the life of a college frat or what not. I believe Victor is the main trickster of them all! Dirty Joe fell into the trap made by the trickster himself Victor!

Amusement…Hendrix

10 12 2006

So how does the chapter of Amusement correspond with Jimmy Hedrix and the so called famous Star Spangled Banner? As a class we viewed various thoughts on the Hendrix Star SPangled Banner by saying that the rough crazy quitar session between the song illistrated bombs and war going on because at the time it was Vietnam. Also, we viewed it as a possible mishape or disgrace on our country. A lot of racism was popular at this time as well. I volunteered in class to voice my opinion and I will stick by it. I told Dr. Sherwood and the rest of the class that I saw the connection between The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and Jimmy Hendrixes Star SPangled Banner to be a multi culteral / war among one another. If you would listen deep into the music of Hendrix you will hear a party! The novel talks about hurricanes and the battles going on between the Indians but yet the all out fun of partying. The song by Hendrix tells the story of life is one big party!

Amusement…

10 12 2006

In the latest discussion and readings of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, the chapter on Amusement seems to be the most exciting one to me to date. Dr. Sherwood brought up this discussion in class and it made me think of various discussions. First off, poor drunk dirty Joe was being drug around this amusement park by Sadie and Victor. These two should be ashamed of themselves! They stuck him on a ride while he was not conscious! No sign of symphothy what so ever! I mean this man embarrassed these two but I believe they wanted it! They brought it upon themselves. When people started noticing what was going on, then Sadie and Victor felt uncomfortable. They didn’t care that they were the only Indians at this Carnival, they didn’t even pay attention to the stares by other people until Dirty Joe gathered up attention. I have to say that Sadie and Victor are cruel and unjustworhty for there heritage. I really felt apauled by what went on in the amusement park that day!

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

8 12 2006

The novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest” was a very good novel. I was very much interested the whole way through it. Yes it had it’s ups and downs based on characters and situations throught the novel, but it was relatively neat. The fact that it took place in the mid 1950’s in a mental institution in the state of Oregan is pretty cool. I really enjoy readings like this because it has the cool things about it like the electric shock therapy chair and such. I hate Nurse Ratched, a former Army nurse who is so cruel and mean and makes those patients do the sickest things. I get very annoyed just when I hear her voice or read about her. The novel brings up the ideas of women and sexuality in various ways. I saw how each character had his or her unique way of expressing themselves using sexuality. I strongly believe this book repeats familiar stereotypes because of the connection of power within the novel. You have multiple personalitys in this psycho ward and multiple characters that all have a sense of power to control one another. It’s like a mind game and McMurphy to me is the strongest one of them all.

Caught between two worlds

30 11 2006

I heard this question get brought up in class one day and I want to touch on it. It was tossed around and used in different ways but the question was “How much of what we think is natural true love, based on the world around us?” What do we as people consider love to be? I can use english literature to help relate love. I feel that in a world full of guilt, violence, and hate; we don’t appreciate the beauty of what really goes on around us. The media points out so much of the wrong doing going on that it completely shuts out the good that is also going on around us. I sometimes wonder if I want my children one day to grow up in a world like this. Taking English literature has further expanded my mind to other imaginable things and has really helped me relate to the word love! I keep mumbling on about various things but my mind seems to be racing right now with that question. I think I have found that special someone and I know that there is someone for everyone and I can only hope we don’t worry to much about the hate in the world and appreciate what we have and who we have!

Blood Wedding Discussion

7 11 2006

The latest readings that we have come across in the classroom is a story called Blood Wedding. We discussed in class the many forms of the story. We discovered a mix of violence, gender, marriage, home/family, and naming the family tree blood. The play really emphasizes a great deal of discussion about family. I really was intrigued in the first scene act 1 with the mother and son. She becomes paranoid when he is about to go out in the field with a knife and she doesn’t want to lose him to violence. What does this play signify? What is it’s purpose and what is it trying to tell us? I strongly believe there is more that meets the eye.

Poems and games

16 10 2006

ok so the shooting words game was pretty cool. The making of an old asteroid game from way back when? I thought the idea of this was pretty neat. Now all the different words coming from different directions kept me on my feet. Having to be sharp when avoiding them and shooting them from every angle was challenging. I thought the lieing poem was sort of fun. I liked seeing other people posting his or her lies and watching these lies be projected on the screen to form a certain poem. To think that thousands of these lies are probably being posted each day and they just continue to be spread out over the internet. It’s like going to confession and confessing your sins only doing it to a world of people.

Pedro & Blanco…love

16 10 2006

In the reading of “The House of Spirits, the thought of whether or not Pedro and Blanco are having some sort of relationship is very much clear to me. They are very much so in love with one another but what are they really thinking? They have this touchy feely relationship that can be seen very clearly. Where will they go with it? I am very much more concerned with if they will ever get sick of one another?

Literature…what?

16 10 2006

What is literature? The definition of literature according to websters online dictionary, is writings in prose or verse; especially : writings having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest. Dr. Sheerwood really stresses to the rest of the class to branch off of literature. What does literature mean to us? What can we make of it? Literature means a variety of things to me. I feel that it is a learning tool to expand the mind on various readings. Literature brings out the beauty in readings. It makes you explore the many ideas of the thoughts around you. It asks questions and gives many different theorys. The concept of literature is to make us interested and want more!
