The importance of “story” for the novel Ceremony discusses the hardships of a troubled Native American man, Tayo. Throughout the story Tayo is gong through an ever-changing experience that makes him realize his true Native American heritage. He has to deal with the issues of racism, which makes him even angrier and gives him even more hatred towards Americans and his own people as well. Also, Tayo is dealing with an illness that impacts his life style. He is constantly trying to fix these internal problems throughout the story because if he thinks he does, he can be cured from the illness and the draught will be over. The story of the draught relates and unfolds to another story where to get the rain back a humming bird and a fly, go on a journey to right the wrong, to get “storm clouds”. Once on the trip, they find themselves going around to do one thing to get the other. Just like Tayo, he went through a lot just to get involved in the “ceremonies” back home. In the end, the strength of mind and the uphill struggle was all paid off for what they originally wanted in the end.
