Author and Digital Literature
October 15th, 2006
My ideas gave the author the role of a teacher. The intentions of what is being taught is to be learned, and I think an author has a reason or gives a learning sense to mind when displaying their writings. An author often wants you to give more thought into what they write to participate or question their point of view on a particular position.
I couldn’t really make any sense from these literary devices because I got too caught up in playing the game asteroids. The tiny ship is able to shoot letters before they crash into him. The arrangement of the game was a little discouraging because the asteroids weren’t actually asteroids but actually little letters that turned into words and phrases if you wanted them to. This also distracted me because I got caught up making words and phrases myself. I think the intention behind the game was to get the reader thinking of anything that they saw on the screen. The purpose was to introduce a different type of language and thinking using yet another style of literature, expressed through a game.
Authority and Order Prompt

The encounter between Blanca and Pedro was supposed to be how the book wanted you to vision how they were going to be for the rest of their lives. They were children, having fun and yet they are would be found in the same position years later. Maybe the book wants you to think they are to be married later in life. Or that they’re lives are really meant to be secret like how it was when they were younger, found hidden from everyone else underneath a table. I think everything that went on between there meetings was supposed to symbolize forever love and devotion. As a reader, I feel ready for this to happen if it would take place considering all of what they went through. It gave me a sort of climax and got me thinking about how it would be if political matters weren’t in the way. Its funny how there political position can get in the way from how they feel for each other as lovers.
Corrido Blog

The circulation of a corrido and its many people who speak of the versions give a new and different perspective on literature and oral traditions of stories being passed down from generation to generation. Unlike fairy tales, these corridos are told about factual incidents. They can help represent the values of tradition and lets its listeners relate to the stories. Artists who pass on these stories usually sing Corridos through song from one singer to another. Usually these songs change over time and people eventually obtain a different understanding to the stories themselves. I also think most literature (like those of the corridos) can have some kind of social use because most literature is frequently talked about to appreciate and understand whatever kind of meaning or message its to express. This can also tell me about how literature can be a learning experience for anyone. In class we have taken these types of literature and applied them to what we already know, and then what we could discover. Literature gives a person the chance to think and express thoughts.
Ceremony Blog

The importance of “story” for the novel Ceremony discusses the hardships of a troubled Native American man, Tayo. Throughout the story Tayo is gong through an ever-changing experience that makes him realize his true Native American heritage. He has to deal with the issues of racism, which makes him even angrier and gives him even more hatred towards Americans and his own people as well. Also, Tayo is dealing with an illness that impacts his life style. He is constantly trying to fix these internal problems throughout the story because if he thinks he does, he can be cured from the illness and the draught will be over. The story of the draught relates and unfolds to another story where to get the rain back a humming bird and a fly, go on a journey to right the wrong, to get “storm clouds”. Once on the trip, they find themselves going around to do one thing to get the other. Just like Tayo, he went through a lot just to get involved in the “ceremonies” back home. In the end, the strength of mind and the uphill struggle was all paid off for what they originally wanted in the end.
Second Blog Prompt

I think blues songs and fairy tales relate a lot to literature. Literature can be presented in many different forms that can display a majority of messages through a song or story. I think anything that has history behind it can demonstrate a similarity to literature. For example, the history of blues and the lyrics relate back to late African American heritage in the segregated Deep South. Fairy tales can also tell a great deal of history just from being passed down from generation to generation. A lot of the time you can notice how stories have changed over time from being passed down and told many times.
The purpose of listening to blues and reading fairy tales in relation to literature, all serve the same purpose, which is simply for enjoyment and probably not much else. But do we read them in a similar way? Usually when I read something I try to get that sense of meaning out from whatever it is I’m interpreting, so I might read more cautiously or with a little self-composure. So overall I think how we read literature depends on what you try to take in from it.
I defiantly think these popular forms of literature are teachable, aren’t we being taught about it right now? I only think it’s teachable because in my opinion anything that can be read, has something to learn about.
I think the choices of language we pick affect our reading experience a lot. The sociolect that we read earlier “Uncle Remus” by Joel Chandler Harris was obviously very confusing and caught me off track from the story all together. Pronouncing what are supposed to be simple words constantly made me go back to re-read line after line. It’s quite possible that texts are written in a specialized style readable. I think maybe they are written in a certain way to affect the approach in which the reader follows. If I seem to put a lot of effort into reading something then it tells me a lot about the text, like it might be way out of my league and too hard to understand or simply not interesting for me to read. I think it tells a lot about what’s normal for language here at IUP also, because it shows that people don’t speak in that kind of direct language.
