Why Fairy Tales

September 20th, 2006

Fairy Tales are part of an old oral tradition passed down from generation to generation to help perceive a natural developement of good morals to the reader or listener. They usually involve folkloric chararacters, royalty, adventure, romance, and best of all happy endings. So what might we learn if we did not have our priorpreconceptions?
After reading the fairy tales i was disappointed and confused. They were different and conveyed a much more realistic meaning. I think the readings are just improved versions of what Disney were just really trying to say. Also, the tales are more engaging to an older audience, as they’re meant to be. They also create a different message to the readers. At the end of the second Little Red Riding Hood, the moral was much more straight forward, as they were implying that if you talk to “wolves” or strangers, they can “pursue young women at home and in the streets” or kidnap and molest. Obviously, after reading Little Red Riding Hood your not going to say, “now little one, what you should have learned is never talk to strangers because they’ll do bad things to you.” Different meanings for different people i guess.
