Corrido

The Corrido shows me a different way to share literature. Yes the story may be modified slightly but the message comes across clearly. At first I’m not going to lie, I didn’t see the reasoning for listening and learning about the Corrido’s but the more we dove into them, the more interest i gained. To me it is like our American folk stories, but in song form. The folk stories are ones that are passed on via word and the version of the story you get depends on the story teller.

At first I thought we were just learning about Cortez (which honestly bored me to tears). But I can completey see this as a social use of literature. I mean I’ve been a camp couselor or 3 years at a Christian camp and telling stories is one of the best ways to convay a message to children and young adults and most of the time us adults enjoy telling them and listening to them more than the children.

I would say this says something about the audience for the plain reason that I mentioned above. Literature can be fine as a book, but if its sung then its really for the audience. I mean all of these Corrido’s are written down and can be read as straight text, but it’s much more enjoyable as a song. And it carries the heritage of the Corrido and its people.

Hey Mara,
This is my first time commenting so here it goes…
The Corrido has a lot going on in it even though it is a short story. I like how you summarized all the different literary styles (song, movie, variant stores.) and combined them to find a central meaning. I also like how you emphasised that the Corrido is not just a story for entertainment, it has a moral meaning which makes it a great story to share with people of all ages. Haha and the part where you were bored to tears cracks me up.
