While I was reading “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” I kept noticing the conflicts between McMurphy and the Big Nurse. It was clearly evident throughout the book that McMurphy felt awkward and didn’t like the fact that the nurse, being a woman, had so much control over him and the other men in the ward. This theme is not only prevalent in the book, but it was also an issue in society. Many men did not like the idea of a women controlling them/advising them/ruling over them. This continues to be an issue in society today as well. We still have not had a female president, because many men, as well as some women, feel that women are inferior to men and can not handle the pressure of such a difficult job. They feel a man’s job is one with power.

Why Fairy Tales?
As a child, I always thought of fairy tales as being happy stories that children read or heard or watched on TV that would make them happy. I don’t know if I necessarily thought of fairy tales as teaching a lesson, but I definitely did not think of them as being anything but happy. They made every little girl want to be a princess or to be in the shoes of the main character. If anything, they taught kids how to dream and always want more for the future.
If we would have heard the other fairy tale stories as children, I think they would have had a much different impact. Children understand more than adults give them credit for. Looking around at society, I have noticed that the kids today seem to know so much more about the world than we did as kids. They pick up on the language used by adults and the things they see on TV.

Second Blog Post
I believe that popular forms of literature like fairy tales and song lyrics are strongly related to literature. Fairy tales are classic stories that have been told in some form for generations. They are happy stories that in some cases may teach a moral while in others they may just serve the purpose of making a child happy, but I feel that they are definitely a major part of literature. Song lyrics are also forms of literature. Song lyrics tell a story, lyrics are basically poems set to song. This gives the poems more meaning with a stronger way to send the message to the audience. I feel that we may read song lyrics and fairy tales in a different way than we do classic literature like Shakespeare, but that is because it is more common to us.
While we grew up listening to fairy tales and songs, we treat Shakespeare’s works differently due mainly to the style in which it is written. The language it is written in is a different form of old English which we don’t use anymore. This makes words and phrases difficult to understand for most of us. For me, it is so distracting, that I have a hard time following the story line, and therefore do not enjoy reading it, but for others, it provides a specific mood to the story and takes the reader back to the time in which it was written as they read. A piece that can do this is definitely classic literature. In the future, I believe that people will look back on the things we have written or the movies we have created, and have a hard time understanding some of the things we say. The phrases and words that we use are fine today, but even ten years from now, they will be “old fashioned” and then new words will be present.

Story Post
The bits and pieces of story that are included throughout the novel Ceremony are very important key elements. They tell a story, but on a deeper level, they seem to connect with Tayo and what is going on in his life. These passages give us insight to Tayo’s Indian heritage and seem to connect Tayo with his past.
Each little clip of the poem seems to apply with what is currently happening in the novel. This helps to tie it in, as well as to show that there were problems in the past, as well as the current problems that Tayo faces, but it shows him that he’s not the only person that has had to face trials like these.

Cortez
In reading the many different versions and seeing how corridos circulate so much, I find it says a lot about the stories and the culture. Song is one of the best ways to pass on a story either from town to town, or through generations. The further the song gets passed though, the more it is subject to change. Corridos changed due to one of many reasons.
One reason the words may change or be altered is because the teller may have forgotten the words or a verse of the song. Another reason is because the singer/storyteller wants to put themselves in the shoes of Cortez, so they change certain details, like where he was from and where the story took place. They do this to try to personalize the story a little bit to make it more interesting and exciting for the listeners. Therefore, the further the story gets passed along, the more changes are made, and if it’s passed along enough, then the ultimate version could be quite different than the original, possibly to a point where they seem like two different stories entirely.

Digital Literature
The digital literature that we watched in class was very interesting. It was very frustrating for me to watch it. I definitely got a headache from trying to read it all. It’s almost impossible to catch every word, and the way the words are presented is quite interesting. The presentation looks cool, and is quite creative, but I did not find any logical meaning that connected any of it. It just seemed like a bunch of random words for every letter of the alphabet. I don’t really understand how that can be considered literature, but I suppose that society’s view on literature is also changing with the times.
I personally did not find it fun. It was quite confusing to try to find a meaning behind it. I didn’t understand at first, it kind of made me feel stupid watching it and trying to figure it all out. The words went by so fast that it was impossible to read them all and still connect them to what was being shown. I did not find a meaning behind it. You definitely have to think outside of the box when you approach this form of literature.
House of the Spirits
In The House of the Spirits, there are many different tensions presented. The encounter between Blanca and Pedro is one of them. Blanca is the daughter of Clara and Esteban, and is of a higher class than Pedro. Pedro is the son of one of the workers for Esteban at Tres Marias. He is poor and hungry.
The two children are around the same age, and when they meet, they form an instant bond. They play together without clothes on and spend the whole day having fun together. That evening, Blanca falls asleep under the kitchen table on Pedro’s belly. The adults are worried about them and had been searching for them all day, but they don’t officially put a stop to them seeing each other. As they get older, they begin (especially Pedro) to realized that the reality of them being a couple is not very good, but they still continue to sneak away and see each other.
