Blogging

The weblog provides students with a unique means of publishing content—meeting needs that current technology services do not meet (webct, email, people.iup.edu). Blog use is educationally appropriate because it encourages the development of intellectual and communication skills that are desirable in the university graduate.

Blogs are “student-centered” spaces, encouraging reflection

Blogs introduce students to the dynamics of writing as a public activity

Blogs correspond with real examples of citizen-journalism in the “blogosphere”

Blogs can be used to build community and social relationships

Local support

IUP support would enable students broader participation and insure students and faculty access to a stable and maintainable service. This would also facilitate “Technology Civility” and allow IUP the capacity to limit abuse should it occur. Using proprietary, third-party services would mean students do not have access to local instruction or support; the inconsistent service and interfaces would further impede adoption.

PodCasting

IUP support of blogging (with RSS feeds and enclosures) would also enable podcasting by default. Podcasting is an extensible, low-resource means for students to distribute sound and video files in cases where streaming is not necessary or desired. Podcasts

feed subscribers audio/video stored in students’ people spaces

accessible tool for the distribution of student-produced work within classes

enables students, faculty or groups seeking to provide audiences with portable media

Discuss instructional uses and extent of demand
B. Created at faculty request, linked with and limited to class registrants; a CMS base facilitates access management within broad framework. Uniform accessibility; less customization.
